California has more than 68,000 open computing jobs with an average salary over $100,000, and we can't fill them. It’s unacceptable: That’s why I’m leading efforts to call for greater access to computer science classes across California colleges and universities. Read more about what we’re doing with UC and Cal State schools here.

But we also need to tackle this problem well before college. Only one-quarter of California’s high schools offer computer science, and the numbers show undeniable gender and racial gaps. We need to diversify tech and ensure access to computer science classes and opportunities for all of California’s students.

That’s why I sponsored legislation to develop a long-term plan to expand computer science offerings into California’s schools, starting in kindergarten – now we need to move full speed ahead to make that plan a reality.

This is an economic imperative. This is an equity imperative. California is the tech capital of the country, and we have to empower all our students with the computer science skills and opportunities to keep leading us forward in innovation.
